What You Need to Know for Albion’s Precinct 3 November 5th Election.

By Albion Michigan News Staff, November 2, 2019

Election Day: November 5th, 2019 at 7:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M. all Precinct 3 Residents will vote at the St. Johns School, 1020 Irwin Avenue, Albion, MI. 49224

Precinct 3 will vote on whether to maintain Councilwoman Sonya Brown as their representative or elect the challenger Al Smith. If Al Smith is selected, it will be a partial term election ending December 20, 2020.

This recall election was set after the Calhoun County Clerk’s Office received recall petitions from Precinct residents earlier this year. Calhoun County Clerk Anne Norlander stated, “This Call of Election serves as the official declaration of the sufficiency of recall petitions against Albion City Precinct 3 Council Member Sonya Brown.” Candidates interested in challenging Sonya Brown for the council seat had until July 26th to contact Albion city clerk. Fast Forward to today and we now have Sonya Brown facing Al Smith. Both candidates released flyers in the community & on social media to reach out to eligible voters ahead of the election.

This recall vote was initiated by Albion Precinct 3 resident Bruce Nelson. The recall effort is in response to reports of leaked text messages sent from Sonya Brown to Albion’s then-City Manager, LaTonya Rufus. The subject of the text message is alleged to be about Scott Kipp, who was then serving as the head of the city’s public safety department. The leaked text message which read, “get rid of him! He’s untrustworthy.” The Petitions state this particular text message violates Section 5.8 of the city charter, which reads, “council members shall not individually direct the appointment or removal of any administrative officer or employee of the city.”

If you still need to register to vote you will be glad to hear that under a new law in the state, Michigan residents who haven’t registered can still do so, by heading to their clerk’s office any day up to and even on Election Day. There’s been an abundance of enthusiasm and support for both candidates as Election Day nears.
