June 23, 2019 Albion, MI (AMN) — Strolling down Michigan Avenue heading Downtown an increasing amount of trash litters the sidewalks.
Swisher sweet wrappers, Candy wrappers, Empty Alcohol Containers and Cigarette butts are the primary littered objects.
It would be beneficial to have a Trash can on the 100 block of Michigan Avenue, but we witnessed an amount of trash less than 10 feet from a trash container plus the containers have a hefty price tag. Uline offers the trash containers for $600.00.
Albionites can do better. Hopefully by bringing this littering issue to the publics attention those of us who live in Albion will not need to fill up trash bags full of litter and pray that trash will not appear again and the cycle will not continue.
There are litter laws in Michigan that come with steep fines. Under the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act 451 of 1994
324.8905a Violation as state civil infraction; civil fine; default remedies; exception.
(1) A person who violates this part, if the amount of the litter is less than 1 cubic foot in volume, is responsible for a state civil infraction and is subject to a civil fine of not more than $800.00.
(2) A person who violates this part, if the amount of the litter is 1 cubic foot or more but less than 3 cubic feet in volume, is responsible for a state civil infraction and is subject to a civil fine of not more than $1,500.00.
