MDOT to host Community Meeting May 15 for M199 & M99 Road Diet

M199 Eastbound

Update May 15, 2019 Albion, MI (AMN) – Tonight at 6:00 p.m. MDOT and Albion will be hosting the Community Informational Meeting for the M-199 Road Diet at the Ludington Center. Residents of Albion are invited to attend and ask questions as well as provide local input.

May 8, 2019 Albion MI (AMN) – We’ve all had our fair share of confusion concerning M99 and M199 through Albion. Recently MDOT met with City Officials to discuss plans for updating both routes and assuring that both routes will be up to traffic code and safe for residents, students and commuters alike. A recent review of the traffic control orders led to findings that M-99 does not meet the requirements of those orders in their current condition.

MDOT Representative Nick Schirripa stated that the road diet for M-199 is due to “a reduction in vehicular traffic, and an increase in bike and pedestrian traffic. The reduction will allow for a middle turn lane, as well as pedestrian and bike lanes.” This same plan for M-199 may also be applied to Michigan Avenue/M-99 in the future. Grants such as the TAP grant may become an option in the future.

M-199 runs 4.030-miles and terminates in Sheridan Township at exit 119 off Interstate 94. The eastern terminus is a junction with the Business Loop of I-94 in downtown Albion. M-99 runs north to connect to the 496 Capitol loop in Lansing. The routes southern terminus is the Ohio border and state route 15 in Pioneer, OH. During the meeting potential dates were set for a public Q&A session. That meeting date has now been set for May 15, 2019. (Details below)

Meeting Announcement: Public Q&A – MDOT and the City of Albion will be holding a public meeting on Wednesday, May 15th. This meeting is open to the public to discuss the potential options for reducing the number of lanes on M-199/Austin Avenue from four lanes to three lanes between 27 Mile Road and Superior Street. A similar plan may be discussed for M-99/Michigan Avenue.
