June 13, 2019 Albion, MI (AMN) – Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in the U.S. It dates back to 1865 when Union Soldiers led by Major General Gordan Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas spreading the news that slavery was “over.” President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 but word had not spread to Texas due to a lack of Union troops in the state. The forces of the Union had to overcome General Lee’s influence and troop numbers in Texas. In April of 1865 General Lee surrendered and General Granger’s regiment was strong enough to overcome the resistance. Former slaves had nowhere to go but departing the plantations and heading north was the first step for many towards freedom. The Community of Albion will be celebrating Juneteenth on June 15, 2019. There will be music throughout the day, as well as a Gospel Fest beginning at 5 p.m. Vendors, games, and fun for the WHOLE FAMILY! Let’s celebrate together as an entire community.
